Episode: Beauties on the Beach
Original Air Date: January 24, 2007 Nate and Cecille rejoins the rest of the group upstairs after surviving last episode's elimination. Jennylee is thrilled that Nate, the object of her affection, will be staying in the house for a little while longer. Nate, because he is a decent person, has no hard feelings about being sent to the elimination room. However, Her Skankiness Queen Cecille is in a tiff at the thought that she, of all people, should be sent. It's clear to Niels and Jennylee that there may be payback. The next morning, Host Mike Richards informs the crew that they will be going on a vacation, because they deserve the rest. It must pretty hard living in that huge mansion, sunbathing by the pool, and hanging out in the hot tub. One can see why they would need a break from all that. And what exciting and exotic location will the geeks and beauties be traveling to? Tell them, Mike! San Diego! That's right, an all-expense paid trip to the far off land of San Diego! Bus fare included! Oh, come on! Even the Brady Bunch had more interesting vacations than that! But this will be a working vacation. Mike tells the girls that they will be studying waves. Yes, they'll be spending time on the beach, but they won't be studying ocean waves. No, they'll be studying a different kind of waves - radio waves! Because they'll be studying electronics! Get it? Ha ha! That Mike, what a card! The boys' assignment will be to lead a group of people in a fitness workout routine. The sight of chubby Mario doing jumping jacks alone should make this episode worthwhile. Nate tells us, "I'm about as fit as glass of spoiled milk - I'm chunky and white." Once in San Diego, the various teams make their way down to the hotel gym to develop a workout routine. It seems as if none of the guys have ever even seem a gym. Megan and portly Mario are having the roughest time. Megan: "I'm thinking maybe you should do kicks." Mario: "I can't do kicks." Megan: "Boxing?" Mario: "I'm not comfortable with that." Megan: "Push-ups, then." Mario: "I can't do push-ups!" Jennylee still hasn't forgiven Niels for sending her man to the Elimination Room last episode. So, they're not really getting along right now. They still manage to work together in the gym, barely. Niels shows Jennylee some boxing moves he uses to exercise. He looks like a stick figure trying to throw punches. Jennylee disses all of his ideas and makes him do her kind of exercises. That night, the group is treated to a sunset cruise aboard a yacht. In the middle of the cruise, Erin jumps up on the rails, and then up in front of the bridge and starts doing a hoochie dance. Everyone else is begging her to come down, or at least take off her high-heeled shoes so she's less likely to fall, but she's just ignores them. Erin tells us later that she's "adventurous", which is another word for "drunk". Later at the hotel, Cecille shows her butt (figuratively, though I'm sure she wouldn't mind showing it literally to anyone who would ask) by saying really hurtful things about Niels, ridiculing him for crying during last episode's Staircase Ceremony. She calls him several names, including "nerd", and "piece of junk". Jennylee concludes that Cecille is not to be trusted. Niels learns that physical beauty is highly overrated. It's like an after school special. The herd gathers at the beach the next day for the boys' challenge. Mike Richards informs them that the group they will be leading will be the Beauties, who are somewhat less than thrilled to find out they'll be doing five workouts. Drew does a decent job of making sure the girls have fun during his workout. Niels on the other hand, tells us that his idea of a good workout is one where "you throw up afterward". Towards that end, he starts off by having the girls jog in a circle, followed by walking on all fours "like a bear". Mario and Scooter both manage to come up with decent workouts. Nate shows up in the ugliest workout ensemble ever created. He has only ten minutes, but it looks like he spends about five of it describing to the girls all the different muscles they'll be exercising. In the end, Scooter is chosen as the winner by the two judges (fitness instructors). As one of the judges says, "Brown dress socks aren't really appropriate workout attire, but anyone who shows up doing 'Arnolds' [a weight-lifting exercise] I've got to respect." The girls aren't done sweating, though. Their challenge this week is to use metal detectors to find buried metal boxes which contain walkie talkie components. They must put the walkie talkie components together and contact their geek counterparts who are waiting across the water. The geeks will then provide them with combinations to unlock kayaks which the beauties must row across to their geeks. This is as convoluted as a Survivor challenge. I would be remiss if I did not mention what Nate is wearing for this occasion. Along with the drunken truck-driver baseball cap which he never takes off, he's wearing a bright orange T-shirt with a black clip-on tie over a pair of really, really short green shorts, and his red sneakers. Mind you, he's on the beach. This whole season could just be about what Nate wears. Megan gets off to a great start and is first to find a metal box containing walkie talkie components. She puts the walkie together and radios over to Scooter. Unfortunately, Megan fails to realize she must take her finger off of the button when she's done talking. So Scooter can hear her, but she can't hear him. Cecille, then Nadia, then Erin all find their walkie talkies, put them together, and get their kayaks out on the water, all the while Megan still hasn't taken her finger off of the button. Cecille ends up winning the challenge, much to the dread of Jennylee and Niels, who expect to be sent to the Elimination Room as a result. They buckle down and study hard, though it's dubious how much Jennylee is actually absorbing. "What does 'RADAR' stand for?" Niels asks her. "I have no idea." "RAdio Detection and Ranging." "Where does the 'I' come from?" "There's no 'I' in 'RADAR'" Nate doesn't want Jennylee to go, but Cecille insists on getting to choose since she's the one who won the challenge. She announces to everyone that she will speaking for her team. Nate quickly tells her that she will be speaking for herself. During the Staircase Ceremony, Niels and Jennylee get the expected bad news while Scooter and Megan choose Drew and Erin. Drew had given the impression that he was a rehabilitated Trekkie, but being chosen for elimination seems to have pushed him off the wagon. Upstairs he delivers a Star Trek farewell speech to the group, "Many think of Time as an enemy, but Time is like a companion, traveling with us along our journey." (Sadly, I think I recognize that speech.) Then he declares, "Live long and prosper, everybody!" Later, he tells the camera that he and Erin are "ready to go at Warp Speed. Engage!" So sad. He had come so far. It's time for elimination. Erin misses both of her questions. Jennylee is able to correctly answer both of hers, including being able to spell 'antenna'. Drew gets his first question incorrect, meaning that Niels doesn't even have to answer any questions. Drew and Erin are eliminated this week. Next week - Will Nate make his move on Jennylee? A third partner gets added to each team. |
